Mysterious Bloody Painting of Fakfak

Visiting Kokas, Fakfak district, West Papua, like visiting an old city. In this district there are areas of ancient sites that store with the mystery of magic in it. Not only attractive, but also invite people to come pick beauty.


One of the famous ancient sites in Coke is a painting on the steep rocky cliffs. By the local community, this steep rocky cliffs called Tapurarang. Coke property in the District since prehistoric relics can be found in Andamata, Fior, Forir, Darembang, and Goras.


So, what's the uniqueness of the painting of an image of human hands and animals on the cliff wall? Despite centuries, paintings made with dyes from natural materials are still visible today. Red cliffs on the painting also resembles the color of human blood. Therefore local communities are also often referred to these paintings as a blood hand print painting.

For the local community, the location of this cliff painting is a sacred place. They believe this painting is the form of people cursed by the ghost of a grandmother who turned into a demon or a ghost kaborbor believed to be the ruler of the ocean's most fearsome. My grandmother died during the sinking boat accident which he was riding.

Of all the passengers on the boat, this grandmother just died. It is said that none of the passengers on the boat who tried to help her grandmother to save ourselves. Feel hurt, ghost grandmother who has turned into a demon kaborbor cursed the passenger boats that tried to save himself on a rock cliff. Because of the curse is all the passengers and the results immediately brought the sea into a cliff paintings.

On this cliff paintings in this location, you also can see skeletons of human bones. This framework is a framework ancestors believed ancestral society or Kokas. In ancient times the people here have a habit of putting the body of ancestors who died in the stone cliffs, caves, headlands or under large trees that are considered sacred.


Interested in prehistoric trace in Coke? From the terminal Fakfak you have to travel overland to the Coke using transportation out of town. Fakfak-distance as far as 50 kilometers Coke will take in about 2 hours. You spend quite as much as $3 U.S per person, each way. Arriving at Coke, the trip still had to continue using the longboat with the travel time approximately 1 hour. If the water was high tide, you can go to the cliff and watch this painting up close. However, if the water receded, the beauty of this cliff painting can only be enjoyed from the longboat.
